The latest official version of the client is working fine for me now even though it doesn't detect the SSID - or at least show that it does. When my PC runs MPE I see the client start on my phone and then it spins. After the sync the client closes after 15 minutes of idle.

you are right. MPE 1.0.62 only says that WLAN is active, but does not display the SSID any more. This thread was opened with MPE 1.0.47

Is it possible that one of your PCs has Bluetooth on and the other doesn't? To test your theory of cell data making the connection you need to turn off Bluetooth and WiFi on your phone, then launch Windows MPE and see if phone MPE starts.
