All icons missing - replaced by red cross...?

Beitrag von majdnem »

All icons in MPE are missing - replaced by red cross on white background.
Uninstalled and then downloaded and installed new MPE, but problem persists.
Really baffled - any suggestions?
(BTW, apologies if this has already been answered - i did have quite a thorough search and was surprised to find nothing on this problem.)
Please help - this is making MPE difficult to use and i *love* MPE!
Windows XP, SP3, using a K750i

RE: All icons missing - replaced by red cross...?

Beitrag von marcus collins »

On my system the DLL containing the icons was flagged by AVG Antivirus as being corrupt (but not infected), and moved to the virus vault. This resulted in the problem the original poster described -- icons missing and replaced by red cross on white background. AVG insists that its analysis is not a false positive.

Reinstalling and then making the antivirus software treat the icons DLL as an infection resolved the problem for me.

How can a plain resource DLL be a virus ? This file contains no executable code, it just holds the resources. I'll take a look at it

how can i get AVG to treat the icons DLL as an infection?

Beitrag von Gast »

As Marcus says, this problem is caused by AVG. I found the icons dll in the virus vault, restored it, and the problem was fixed ...until the next AVG scan, which just removed it to the vault again. I didn't understand exactly what Marcus meant by getting AVG to "treat the icons DLL as an infection". Rather than as corrupt? How can i do this - i've looked for a way but can't find anything?
And, again as Marcus said, when i submitted the file to AVG for review, the reply was that the file was indeed corrupt.
Hopefully this can be properly sorted out with AVG, but in the meantime, how can i get AVG to treat the icons DLL as an infection?
Thanks very much for your help - really appreciated.
Cheers,
George

in really doubt, that your dll file is corrupt. But try this one:

download new version of MPE.
Deinstall your current Version!
Deactivate AVG
Install current version OF MPE.
Start MPE (works?)
Start AVG
If AVG throws an error, can you "ignore this file" somehow? I use avira, never used AVG,... sorry!

I'm near sure that its not a corrupt dll, i think its a false-alert by AVG. I wonder cause you are up to yet the only one here who reported this problem

AVG antivirus still treating as corrupt

Beitrag von majdnem »

Seems unlikely that it would be just me and Marcus (who posted the original reply to my query) that have this problem
I've tried reinstalling with AVG off, and i've tried on a different computer - same problem.

Marcus suggested that this problem could be addressed with the workaround of forcing AVG to treat the file not as corrupted but as infected:
"making the antivirus software treat the icons DLL as an infection resolved the problem".
Can anyone tell me how to do this? I can't find out how.
Thanks![/code]

Same Problem with AVG and iconlib.dll

Beitrag von mikehumph »

I have the same problem. It started after I updated to the latest version of AVG (AVG11)
Restoring iconlib.dll from the virus vault makes MPE work as normal again, but AVG finds it as "corrupted" on the next scan. I submitted it to AVG as a false positive, but the reply came back that it was correctly identified as corrupt.

Its really a pain with the virus-softwares

Its even not possible to report a false-alert to AVG if you have not installed their software. Please test your IconLib.dll on Virustotal and tell me about the result. i did it already and this was the result: http://www.virustotal.com/file-scan/rep ... 1288386753

If you also get a clean virus-total report then please send them again the false-positive with the link to virus-total. Explain them that its a pure resource-dll there is no executable code in this file, its just used for holding icons and bitmaps. You can tell them also my mail-address if they want to contact me: fj.wechselberger<at>gmx.at

Many thanks for your help

AVG forum thread

Beitrag von Gast »

As suggested, i have submitted the 'IconLib.dll' file to Virus total and they find no problem with it.
I use AVG free, not the paid version, so I cannot access direct support from AVG, but i have started a thread on the AVG forum:
http://forums.avg.com/gb-en/avg-free-fo ... &id=122723
Hopefully this will attact attention from s/o at AVG who can address this problem. If anyone else experiencing this problem is using the paid version of AVG, perhaps you could request support and direct AVG to this thread and/or the one started on the AVG forum (link above) or give them the developers email address as given in the previous post.
Cheers!

Given up on AVG

Beitrag von Gast »

Have submitted the iconLib.dll to AVG by email with an explanation of the problem.
Thought i'd found a work-around in adding the file to the excluded files list in the advanced settings options in AVG, but for some reason the file was still scanned and moved to the virus vault, so I've decided to just give up on AVG and install different antivirus software on all the PCs i use.
Thanks for all the advice, tho.

I also have this issue with AVG Free 2011 identifying the file as corrupted. Based on other posters previous info, I found the icon.dll file in the virus vault and noted the file path as c:\program files\my phone explorer\icon.dll

went into AVG Free
- choose Tools from ribbon menu
- then advanced settings
- about 8 settings down is a category for PUP (potentially unwanted programs) Exceptions
- choose "add exception" in bottom right
- navigate to file directory; probably c:\program files\myphoneexplorer
- click on the icon.dll file
- the file, path, and checksum should be listed in PUP Exceptions table
- click "apply" in bottom right
- click "ok" in bottom right

This should do the trick! My AVG is set to scan daily, so if the above doesn't work, I'll know tomorrow and I'll post back so others don't waste time on a false solution. But I have another program on my machine that AVG tags as a PUP everytime. I did the above for that program, and everything works fine. I have every reason to believe it will work for the icon.dll file of MyPhoneExplorer!

To the developer (FJ?)...it really is an excellent program. I've only downloaded it 2-3 days ago, but it appears you have accomplished what Microsoft could not...reliably sync with bluetooth/usb connections and included Android as an option!! BRAVO! As soon as I have it tweaked to my preferences and am assured that I will keep it on my machine, I will be making a donation to support your cause and I encourage others to do the same. When free programs outperform the paid program, you really should offer to pay for the increased functionality. JMO...

Two small corrections to the above:

1. locate the tagged file in AVG virus vault first and restore the file; THEN, follow instructions above; ALSO
2. the file is iconLib.dll, not icon.dll

sorry folks...my bad...just a little to excited that i had something worthwhile to contribute...doesn't happen very often!

Please note that for android there is currently no support for Bluetooth. If you use a Android-phone you can use the USB-cable or WiFi (which is much faster than bluetooth) for connection.

Many users asked me why this software is still free. And i did check all pros and contras. Maybe i could get rich with selling the software, but up to yet i got many donations and i also earn some money with the promotion - its enought. I think its also a question of principle

I just installed yesterday and had the same problem with AVG Free. I followed the instructions about the PUP files. I scan every night so I guess I'll find out tomorrow
