Lost archived messages

I have just gone back to using MPE after a few months since my last backup and although the phone is recognised fine when I go to try to view the archive of my messages it doesn't find any. The database file is still there and is the size it was when I left it so how comes MPE doesn't load those messages. How can I now retrieve them?
