SMS over 160 characters splits

This is strange. Suddenly when I send an sms text through MyExplorer with more that 160 characters, the system splits the text. For example, a 200 character text is sent as 2 separate texts. 500 characters into 3 texts. This has only recently started to happen. I've sent long texts before and the system has always joined them as one. If I type the text straight into my phone (HTC One), long texts are not split. Can anyone help please?
Almost same problem here!

Hello,
When my SMS are a couple of lines long, for the last few weeks, they are split by chunk of 65 to 67 characters long. They are cut in the middle of words. It never happens before. I can't say if it started since I change my phone, I'm now using a Galaxy Note III running Android 4.4.2.
Thank very much for any tip on this problem, it is really annoying.
Tom.

Splitting multiple messages in several parts is a known Bug of Android KitKat. The only workarund is currently to set MyPhoneExplorer Client as Standard-SMS-App
@Tom: You did use characters outside the standard GSM charset. In this case the message will be converted to Unicode (MPE does show this on the PC). In this case a message can hold maximal 70 characters.

Thanks FJ. Using MICROSOFT as the SMS client fixed the problem. However, I am running Android version 4.2.2, not Kit Kat. Also, when the SMS client is set to mpe notifications don't work on the phone.

Thanks FJ!
I switched the client to MPE on the phone and, so far, it seems to be ok.
Also, I use "SMS Popup 1.3.0" (from ADAM K) on my phone and it seems ok too!
@GJ: I'm not using characters out of GSM charset. However, you say that MPE will show the switch to Unicode on the PC, where can I see this notification?
Thank again for your advices. Have a great day, Tom.

In the statusbar of the window you will see "Standard" or "UCS2". Here is a ist of GSM Characters:
