MPE hangs on "Load messages from phone"

So, for the past couple of versions of MPE, I've had a recurring problem with MPE. It happens across multiple computers (Running Windows 7, 8, and 8.1) all accessing the same (Galaxy S5) phone.
Immediately after connecting (over Wifi or USB, reproduced both ways), if I go to sync messages I have about a 20% chance of having MPE hang while getting the messages from the phone. I'll see the below, and it never goes any further.
Sometimes killing MPE (from Task Manager) will solve the problem, sometimes a computer restart is necessary.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
