I have been using MPE since 2014, on Win XP Pro, with Samsung Galaxy S and a SE K750i (and confirmed my appreciation with a EUR 20 donation to Franz Josef Wechselberger). There was always an uncertainty due to the lack of detailed instructions, feature descriptions, etc., so it's hard to know what (and how) can and cannot be done within the program but, besides that, it has been very useful and problem-free.

Some time ago, I installed Windows 7 Ultimate as a double-boot with the Win XP partition, and have slowly been populating the new OS, with the intent of migrating to W7 if all my needs can be met there; unfortunately, I haven't managed to get MPE working in W7 and, after many months of trials (and even a system reinstall), I'm asking for suggestions, and any help I can get, to solve this problem.

Initially, I'll comment that, since the hardware and USB cable are the same ones in XP and W7 (it IS the same machine and cable), I think that the common problems with USB cables, power, ports, etc., can be ruled out, so there is no need to check on that: I'm able to connect the two original cell phones, plus a new Samsung Galaxy Young one on Win XP, with full synchro and no problems.

I AM rather uncertain about the steps for installing the phones on Win 7, since the instructions in the MPE FAQ are rather skimpy and, in parts, not applicable. I remember that I had a hard time getting the phone to install and be recognized, but eventually it worked -- but that hasn't happened yet in W7, so possibly the problem lies there.

Part of the difficulty may be due to my unfamiliarity with nomenclature, so I'll describe what I understood about what are the steps to install a cell phone on Windows, based on what's in the FAQ, and I'd appreciate it if anyone can tell me if I'm doing it right. The FAQ says:

"Connecting via USB-Cable:
"3. Download ADB Driver (look up the Linklist below for further instructions).
"4. Enable USB-Debugging on your cell phone.
"5. Connect your cell phone and install the ADB Drivers.
"If there are different options coming up after you plug in your cable, choose Charge Phone, Charge Phone only or something similar!. If you choose "Connect your phone" or something similar, your content on the SD Card is only listed to Windows and cant be accessed on your android phone nor in the MyPhoneExplorer.
"General ADB driver (should work device-independent):
"ClockworkMod Universal ADB drivers or http://adbdriver.com/downloads/"

There is no mention about cell phone drivers, just the ADB driver above (which I installed first of all), and they seem to be necessary, so I installed the "Samsung USB Drivers For Mobile Phones 1.5.55.0" on XP and W7, and the OS seems to use them when the phone is first connected -- but that worked OK (after a few tries) on XP, but seems to be not so OK on W7, and I suspect it all depends on how the phone is configured when it's linked to the PC the first time (I say "first time", because it seems the OS memorizes what it "saw" the first time, and efforts to get it to recognize the phone differently won't work.

Yes, there usually are "different options coming up after you plug in your cable", but none of them (in any cell phone I have seen) include "Charge Phone, Charge Phone only or something similar", or even "Connect your phone"! The Galaxy S shows 3 options: "KIES", "Media Player" and "Storage", and the KIES option seems to work best on XP, but on W7 not: Only "Media Player" and "storage " seem to be accepted -- but, afterwards, MPE cannot connect! On the Samsung Young there are just two options, "MTP" and "PTP", and on many other phones there are the same two options, with maybe also "UMS/MSC".

The main problem seems to be that, if you first connect the phone as PTP, the OS only recognizes it as storage device/disk(s), and MTP (which I would expect to be the equivalent to KIES) doesn't work.

So, I can link the two Samsung phones to the W7 OS, and even explore/copy files, but there's no way to get them recognized by MPE: When I ask it to connect or add a new user, MPE crashes, with the following message (translated to English by me, from my pt-BR OS):

And here's the contents of the "Debug.txt" file for the Samsung S (GT-I9000B) connection try:

So, any ideas/suggestions on what I should do (short of starting over and reinstalling Win 7 -- and even then I'm not sure how I SHOULD connect the phone)?
