New phone, now unable to send SMS from computer

I have probably missed something very obvious so apologies in advance!
MPE version 1.8.9, and computer is running Windows 10.
I just changed my old Samsung Galaxy S2 (!) with Android 4.12 for a WileyFox Spark X Android 7.0.
All the MPE functions I commonly use seem to be OK apart from using the computer keyboard to send SMS. This is a function I used a lot on the S2.
I use USB connection to the computer (no hub) - with the same cable & USB port as before.
All the Old SMS are in the GUI and I type a new message but when I hit send, I get there error message:
CMS ERROR: Null - Unknown error.
Sending a text from the computer with the phone not connected causes a different error. I can create and synch a new contact, MPE notes is tranferring notes OK etc so it knows the phone is connected.
The phone shows the text in the SMS app as one I tried to send but failed (so pretty accurate then!)
I even changed the phone's default SMS app to MPE client (this was not something I needed to do on the old S2) but it made no difference.
Any ideas?
