Windows FIREWALL alert?

Hi everyone,
My first post - but I'm a long time fan of MPE!

I've just upgraded from an old SonyE phone to an HTC Wildfire.
I tried 'HTC Sync' but found it too inflexible for me - No wifi connection being the worst thing.

So was very happy to find that MPE has moved into the Android world (before I had!).

I have everything all up and running but I thought I would register here to mention that my only concern was with a Windows Firewall alert when running the software.

I've blocked the connection and everything still works fine. Could you please put my mind to rest as to what this could be?

MyPhoneExplorer will raise a Firewall-Alert, this is normal. But MyPhoneExplorer does not open a backdoor or similar, its needed to detect the WiFi-IP of the phone. I wonder that it worked for you with block in Firewall.

I'm running MPE (via wifi) on XP and Vista - both issued a firewall alert and both are working fine with things 'blocked' - strange one.

Obviously if things work with it blocked it would look 'safer' if the firewall warning didn't occur.

Its not possible to detect the local Wifi-IP of the phone without opening a listening port on PC so its also not possible to overide the firewall warning

Fair enough.

As I mentioned strange that even after blocking the firewall request that I see, everything works fine.

It's great software. I've been using it long before I got an Android phone so I'm happy to trust nothing malicious is going on.

Hehe - MyPhoneExplorer gets NOT blocked by your firewall, but do not ask me why

I've just removed the Windows XP Firewall rule for MPE.

Connected my phone, received a new Firewall warning, see image/details here: http://www.hmmm.ip3.co.uk/mpe-firewall.shtml

Clicked 'keep blocking' and connected/accessed my phone with no problems.

This time MyPhoneExplorer was really blocked, the connection worked cause MyPhoneExplorer does cache the last used IP

But it's always been blocked so I'm not sure how it manages to cache it?
i.e. It connects without ever being allowed through the Firewall.

The first time when you select blocking then it is not really blocked - as i saw in your 5th post

Yes it was. There was no alert generated as the rule was already in place. When I removed the rule and connected the alert was regenerated as seen in my second log post.

As I mentioned. With the firewall in place blocking the attempted connection it still all works fine. So I'm not sure what's trying to connect - but I run with it blocked with no problem.

Perhaps we should leave it there as we don't seem to be getting anywhere? Very Happy

I'm happy to run with the firewall rule in place - and hopefully others won't be put off if they receive an alert after hearing your assurance that nothing malicious is occurring.
