I read somewhere that synch from Outlook Contacts to phone then back to Outlook can result in loss of data. Is that true? IOW, if I ake a change to a Contact on the phone, then use MPE to sync back to Outlook, will all my Outlook data fields be faithfully transferred back, with only the changes being different?
Thanks.

Hi Ed
Recently I had an experience where I lost all my contacts on the PC Outlook and I had to restore from MPE backup. I came across a difficulty with MPE ver 1.8.4 that it would time out and won't complete the restore of contacts.
I tried it few times and every time it will restore only 978 contacts. I have over 2000 contacts.
Lucky I also had a back on the iPad as well and I managed to restore all my contacts to Outlook and then sync to the phone.
How ever the whole experience raised a question to me. I have been using this software for few years and always been very happy with it.
Anyway I downgraded the recent version to previous version 1.8.3 to eliminate the issue of time out and I tried to run the restore again. Although it did not timeout this time, however I discovered that only 978 contacts were restored and it completed the restore.
The moral of the story is I think the software has a limitation of only upto 1000 contacts to restore. May be if FJ and his team will read this post, they can improve this feature to give a unlimited contacts restore option. Perhaps I was doing something wrong that I could not restore full contacts.
All the other restores of such as Events, Tasks, SMSs were restored to full. I have over 5000 SMSs in the backup file.
For a free software with such a great number of features I just cannot fault this software. Its one of its kind.
All the credit goes to FJ & his team for creating such a nice piece of software, and distributing for FREE and in return only asking for a donation of any amount. It just shows the greatness of the developer.
People who come on this forum and complain and winge about the software or about the developer, please take one step back and think for a moment what FJ and his team has given you for FREE. I have not yet come across anything in the market that matches this software.
Sorry ED for using your post as a escape goat to take my anguish out.
No I am not paid by FJ to promote this product. I am just a happy faithful fan of the software and sincerely like the product.
Regards

Hi CW,
I share your sentiments. Although I have only once managed to connect and sync my phone from Outlook at this point, I a impressed with the product. I'll keep trying.
Relative to your, my needs are modest. I have only about 170 contacts.
BTW, do you find the ones that did get transferred to Outlook are complete? I read somewhere that MPE only transfers the more commnly used data items to the phone and therefore cannot write complete records back to Outlook.

Today it connected right away via WiFi and Autodetect. The only thing I can think of that I did differently was not trying USB first.
Anyway, I synced with Outlook, forcing phone to Outlook. The one or two new contact entries transferred smartly. Then I edited one of them in Outlook and synced forcing Outlook to Phone. Again, it did it faultlessly.
I did learn more about the user interface, not completely obvious to me when I started. First, Settings has to be used to select what you want to sync with, e.g., Outlook, for Contacts, Calendar, and Notes. Otherwise, I suppose, it just syncs the phone with the MPE database. Then, you have to (I think) use the Advanced button to say what kind of syncing you want it to do, e.g., force phone to Outlook. At least that seems safest to me.
I didn't do a thorough test, but it looks like all the data is being transferred back and forth.
I'm a happy camper!

Comments such as those come about because Outlook and Android do not share all contact fields, as they were written by two completely different companies for their own purposes. A 'Google' (and 'search' on these forums) should bring up which fields match up and which are just incompatible. I wouldn't worry too much though as I've not, in 2 years, found any myself that don't match. But then I just use the more common ones and don't use things like 'other fax' or 'assistant (not sure if those two match or not, but they're just an example of 'uncommon' fields to use).

Thanks, dvhttn. That's what I expected. I've not done a thoruogh test but so far it looks like my contacts survive the round trip just fine.

@crazynwild: Your problem has absolutly nothing to do with the question of jag_man. There is no limit on restoring contacts but maybe there is a problem with the connection to the phone. I think you did create already a thread about this so i will not go deeper into details here. |
