Sony Xperia x10 mini -Unable to connect phone & download

Help!! I have successfully used MyPhoneExplorer previously with 2 other Sony Ericsson phones (older phones & not android) to download text messages.
I'm now trying to connect up my Sony Ericsson Xperia x10 mini, and having no luck.
I believe I now have the ABD driver installed.
I have Version 1.8.6 of MyPhoneExplorer on my computer.
But when I try to connect via USB, I keep getting the message
"Connection to phone could not be established".
I have enabled USB de-bugging on my phone.
I have gone to the app store on my phone, and tried to download MyPhoneExplorer Client, which seemed to download ok onto my phone, however in trying to connect my phone (or if I click on the MyPhoneExplorer icon on the phone screen) it just comes up with a message on the phone screen saying "Sorry! The aplication MyPhoneExplorer Client (process com.fjsoft.myphoneexplorer.client) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." with a box below it saying "Force Close"
I also have the problem that my phone keeps turning itself off and on, which is making constant connection to the computer difficult.
Please help!! I'm desperate to download my text messages from the phone and don't want to lose them.

I should also add that someone suggested connecting up via Sony PC Companion, but I've not had any luck with accessing my text messages in that way either. It seems to recognise my phone, and has offered a software update, but I'm wary to do so, as I think I've heard other people say they've lost data when updating their phone software, and I really want to download my texts, and not risk losing them

Still trying to work this out. Should I be using an earlier version of Myphoneexplorer Client? and if so, how would I install it onto my phone? Help!
