USB connection not working anymore

EDIT: Changing USB port apparently solved the problem but it was only temporary. After a while I was disconnected and could not connect anymore

Hello,
as per subject I can't connect anymore via USB to my Samsung S5 mini (Android 6.0.1) from my Windows 10 PC (build 1803).
It used to work like a charm and I made no significant changes to either configuration.
I'm using the latest client version 1.8.11.
From the phone side it says USB cable is connected while on the PC side it says it's not.

Could someone delete the spam reply by Ukiea?

@qwaegin: I have this issue too, but I thought it was my phone that was blocking that feature. I switched two months ago from a Galaxy S4 to a Xiaomi Redmi note 5 and boy, how things have changed since the good ol' 4.2 days: applications can barely emit sound notifications – Whatsapp does, while K-9 mail does not, MPE can no longer delete contacts nor SMS, keeping the phone unlocked when I'm home does not work. There seems to have been such a paranoid movement.

I don't know whether it's MIUI or Android causing that, but things that used to work no longer work. Thinking it was the phone, I double checked that USB debugging was enabled and it is. The MPE client on the phone says that the USB cable is plugged in but trying to connect via USB yields an error on the PC.

I'm running the latest versions of the PC and phone clients, and the PC runs Windows 8.1.

For me now it works with only a minor quirk i.e. I cannot delete SMS on the phone, even after authorizing MPE to manage texts.
