my J7 can't be connected to my pc (Windows 7)

I've tried dozens of times, followed all the troubleshooting instructions, but nothing works. MyPhoneExplorer can't connect to my Galaxy J7. I am running Windows 7, have updated all drivers, allowed MTP on the phone, etc.
I never had any problems with my Galaxy S3 (which unfortunately has developed sudden death syndrome, hence having to get a new phone) syncing everything I wanted. Because of the SDS I can't transfer data from the old phone to the new, so have to do it via PC. Emails are received on both PC and phone. I input the contacts manually as they wouldn't sync. What I desperately want to do it sync the Outlook calendar with the phone. Please can anyone help me?
BTW, there is no "charge only" mode on a J7 so no idea how to set this when connecting the phone to the pc. There is also no "auto-detect" option in the "connect via" section on pc
