Most of my issues with mpe under linux are in trying to sync an Android phone with Thunderbird. Most of the comment here don't mention an email client, and I just don't understand why. | To each their own!
I don't use Google products as far as possible, so I use MPE to back up my photos, phone records, SMS, etc. Oh, and I love the Notes! No other Android option I've tried comes close. |

Thanks. Note that Thunderbird is a Mozilla based product, not Google. Anyway, I didn't realise people used mpe as a backup tool, rather than a contact and calendar synchronisation tool. It has never even occurred to me to backup SMS, photos etc, since I don't keep any on my mobile. Any photos I take are moved off to my home PC ASAP. Just age I suspect! |

It looked like it worked, but it didn't.
Please advise.
Code: | Instructions:
When MPE starts, click on File > Options, then type COM1 in the
com port text box (for a USB connection) or type COM2 (for a bluetooth
connection), then check Stable connection (for bluetooth) and click OK.
Lastly, click on the 'refresh' button (in the top corner, next
to the Down arrow) and MPE will connect!
Press Enter to run My Phone Explorer!
Running My Phone Explorer...
./myphoneinstaller3.2.sh: line 601: /home/user/.wine/drive_c/MyPhoneExplorer/My Phone Explorer: No such file or directory

MPE also working on Suse Leap 15.3.
MyPhoneExplorer 1.9.0 installed into Leap 15.3 and operating successfully using Wine.
Installation instructions
1. Install Wine.
sudo zypper install --no-recommends wine
2. Install mono and gecko packages needed for .NET and hrml rendering.
sudo zypper install wine-mono
sudo zypper install wine-gecko
3. Configure MyPhoneExplorer to run under wine using a wine prefix.
WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-myphoneexplorer WINEARCH='win32' winecfg
4. Download wintricks.
cd "${HOME}/Downloads"
wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Wi...src/winetricks
chmod +x winetricks
https://wiki.winehq.org/Winetricks
5. Setup VB libraries.
CD to downloads directory.
WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-myphoneexplorer WINEARCH='win32' sh winetricks vb6run
6. Install MyPhoneExplorer
Download MyPhoneExplorer.
CD to downloads directory
WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-myphoneexplorer WINEARCH='win32' wine MyPhoneExplorer_Setup_1.9.0.exe (make sure the exe file name is correct).
7. Start MyPhoneExplorer
Start from the desktop icon or the entry in the applications menu or "Alt-F2 MyPhoneExplorer"
NB: The app does not appear in the task bar and can be hidden by other windows so "Alt-Tab" to locate. This is probably fixable.
I have synced by my phone over WiFi and sent SMS messages. All the buttons work. No issue to report so far. |

I have to rewrite many things to make this Wine-Compatible Versions.
I think its enough if i make after every major-release a wine-version. |
I don't think it is fair to ask you to write Wine versions of MPE for free when you are already creating and distributing a free Windows version of what is the most popular PC phone management app in the world.
It is relatively easy for any Linux user to run MPE in a Virtual Box Windows VM. A Windows license is around 130 Euros assuming the OS cannot get the Windows key from the bios.
Info here: https://www.fjsoft.at/forum/viewtopic.php?t=37498
Let all those people who want a Linux version of MPE crowd fund the effort. Otherwise bite the bullet and buy a license for a Windows VM. |

Agreed, but there is no harm in people trying to work out ways of doing it without having to have a full blown VM, or support from FJ.
I need to sync my contacts and calendar with Linux Thunderbird, so I'm not sure whether a VM would help.
For calendar and contacts it turns out there is a relatively simple method. The calendar can be exported from Thunderbird to a local ics file, and then used from that local file both for Thunderbird and MPE under wine. That works fine and I've made that a permanent change to my system.
For contacts it's a little more difficult. You have to find a way to get Thunderbird to use a shared local file instead of its internal contacts. The CardBook extension for Thunderbird allows Thunderbird to share a local vcf file. MPE under wine can see that as well. Cardbook isn't ideal, since you have to use contacts slightly differently in Thunderbird, but it does work. |

I've checked this thread quite carefully, and still had problems to connect to Android 10 phone (Samsung). There is quite a lot of posts for older times / versions, which today just blure the whole thing. Therfore my comments here, they may help someone.
My system is quite recent:
- Rocky Linux 9.6 with wine 10.14 (custom build, more or less like the latest fedora Rawhide release) and android-tools 35.0.2 (custom rebuilt Fedora 35.0.2-2 package; had problems to rebuild more recent releases...)
- MPE 2.2, installed in 64-bit wine with 32-bit support, with riched30 and vb6run Winblow$ DLLs (there are also some others for other stuff, but probably not relevant here), no msxml DLL overrides
Installation went smooth (I've installed MPE 2.2 over some old - as much as I remember 1.8.x - version, with which I haven't succeed in the past...), but connection to phone didn't work.
First I've succeed with fixed IP in my home private LAN. I've had MPE on the phone already, but access options (PIN to access over IP in particular) have not been set. Entering that fixed a problem, so now I can connect over TCP/IP.
As it is a PC, I don't have WiFi / Bluetooth by default, and I didn't want to mess with an USB dongle at the moment. I will probably try it with my Rocky Linux 10 notebook in the future...
USB gave me the most headache. I've tried with some older android tools first (there is no 35 version for RHEL 9 published...), and managed to see my phone (in linux) using:
adb devices -l
command, but MPE still couldn't find the phone. There is no "stable" option in MPE 2.2 anymore (there are some posts that it has to be set to work...), so at the first moment I've been a bit lost.
I've tried adb.exe included in MPE DLL folder:
wine '~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/MyPhoneExplorer/DLL/adb.exe' devices -l
and got an ADB version mismatch error. At the same time, this command crashed my adb.service in linux:
systemctl status adb.service
result was "dead".
After I've:
1. renamed MPE adb.exe (I didn't want to delete it for now, just in case...):
mv '~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/MyPhoneExplorer/DLL/adb.exe' '~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/MyPhoneExplorer/DLL/adb.exe.orig',
2. downloaded the latest (version 36.0.0 at the moment) SDK Platform Tools (from: https://developer.android.com/tools/releases/platform-tools) and unpacked it to '~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/android-sdk-platform-tools/')
3. created a symlink:
ln -s '~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/android-sdk-platform-tools/adb.exe' '~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/MyPhoneExplorer/DLL/adb.exe'
I succeeded to launch (for test):
wine '~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/MyPhoneExplorer/DLL/adb.exe devices -l'
displaying my phone, and MPE started to connect flawlessly.
I don't remember well if I had to stop / restart adb.service in linux before, or maybe even to reconnect the phone (immediately after "providing a new adb.exe" to MPE), but now it seem to work well.
So, in case of USB issues, make sure MPE adb.exe (in wine) matches your mpe.service (in linux) version and doesn't crash your linux service.
A simple test - you need to see your phone launching:
wine '~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/MyPhoneExplorer/DLL/adb.exe devices -l'
before you should expect MPE to successfully connect to your phone.
Linux adb service doesn't have to run before launching MPE, if you have udev rules present (with your phone included, of course) - it should start as needed / upon your phone being connected.
In any case, if the command above (check of adb in wine) doesn't list your phone, make sure your adb.service in linux is alive:
systemctl status adb.service
(should return running; you can try to launch it manually - using "systemctl start adb.service" - if not, and check the status / logs if still not up...)
and your phone is listed at least in linux:
adb devices -l
(I am launching those things in linux terminal as root).
Hope these details will help someone as me. |
